ITEP (Integrated Teachers Education Program) is something about which students have a lot of confusion—what exactly it is, what benefits it offers, why we should pursue it, who is eligible, what kind of test will be conducted, and how you can secure your seat. So in this article, I will clear all these doubts.
What is ITEP?
First, let’s understand what ITEP is. It is a 4-year program which has been in concept earlier as well. For example, if you combine your graduation and 2-year B.Ed, it becomes a 4-year structure. Similarly, in our country, there are many such integrated courses like BA LLB.
What happens here is that you complete your graduation and B.Ed together, which saves you one year. Along with this, based on your graduation degree, you can apply anywhere—like UPSC, SSC, or any state government job. Your graduation degree remains valid.
At the same time, based on the B.Ed you complete in these four years, you can become a teacher.
Teaching Level Confusion (Primary vs Secondary)
Another confusion students have is whether after B.Ed they can become a primary teacher, whether they can teach nursery-level students, or whether they can teach secondary-level students.
So, you will have this choice. According to our education system (5+3+3+4 structure), students are divided into age groups:
- Foundation
- Preparatory
- Middle
- Secondary
You can choose whichever level you want. You will have the freedom to decide at which level you want to become a teacher in the future.
Nature of the Program (Dual Degree)
So, ITEP is a 4-year integrated (mixed) program in which you will get a dual degree:
- A B.Ed degree (to become a teacher)
- A Graduation degree
You can do your graduation in BA, B.Com, or B.Sc. You also have a wide choice of subjects to select from.

Where Will You Get Admission?
Where will you get admission? This program has been initially introduced in some of the best institutions in the country, such as:
- Indian Institutes of Technology
- National Institutes of Technology
- University of Delhi
- Panjab University
There are many colleges where you can take admission. Initially, there are more than 6000 seats available.
Admission Process (NCET)
Now let’s understand the admission process.
To take admission, you have to give an exam called:
- National Common Entrance Test
You can apply for this test based on your 12th qualification.
- There is no minimum or maximum age limit
- Anyone who has passed 12th—at any age, anytime—can apply
Exam Pattern (Detailed Breakdown)
If we understand the exam pattern, it is divided into multiple sections:
1. Language Section
You have to select two languages that you studied at the school level—such as Hindi, English, Sanskrit, or any regional language.
- Language 1
- Language 2
The language selected in Language 1 cannot be repeated in Language 2.
2. Teaching Aptitude Section
This section focuses on:
- What a teacher’s attitude is
- How a teacher teaches in class
- How situations are handled
Questions will be basic and application-based.
3. General Aptitude Section
This includes:
- Basic GK
- Reasoning
- Mathematics
These are common in most competitive exams.
4. Subject Section
In this section, you have to select three subjects based on your 12th.
For example:
- If you studied History, English, Hindi
There are around 26 subjects to choose from.
There is no restriction that you must select subjects only from your stream.
For example, a science background student can also move towards BA.
So you have complete freedom in choosing subjects.
Exam Mode
- The exam will be computer-based (online)
- You will sit in front of a computer and answer questions
- It is not an offline (pen-paper) test
Who Should Do This Course?
Now let’s come to who should and should not pursue this program.
Recommended:
- Students with lower age
- Students who are currently in 12th or have recently passed
- Students who want admission in top institutions like IITs
Not Recommended:
- Students with higher age
Such students should focus on the traditional 2-year B.Ed program.
What if You Already Have a Graduation?
If you already have a graduation degree, that’s fine. You can still pursue this:
- You will get another graduation in a different subject
- A new stream will open for you
- Along with that, you will also get a B.Ed degree
Why is This a Golden Opportunity?
If you get admission into institutes like IITs, NITs, or Delhi University:
- You will have a graduation degree from a top institution
- Along with a B.Ed degree
- When you apply to private schools, you will get more preference
- Your salary will likely be higher compared to those from normal colleges
It is obvious that students from IITs, NITs, and DU are considered to be at a different level.
Final Admission Flow
- You will give the NCET exam
- A scorecard will be generated
- Based on that, college-wise counselling will take place
This process is similar to exams like JEE and NEET.
